Long Jump Drills : Plyometrics

Plyometric exercises are some of the very best drills that you can do to help your long jumpers increase their distance.

When combined with a strength training program, hip mobility exercises and training in the proper technique, plyometric metric exercises can help increase a players strength and jumping power.

In the clip below Heidi Yost, assistant coach at Wichita State University, shows you a progression of six different plyometric exercises that she use to train her long jumpers.

Circle Pops : High Jump Drill

When high jumping athletes are asked to jump in a way the is different than other types of jumps. The athlete must jump while leaning in a running in a circular path. Below are two clips that help high jumpers lean in while they are jumping. Both clips feature Travis Geopfert, University of Arkansas Assistant Coach. In the first clip he teaches jumpers how to run in a circle with proper technique, feeling the bend at the ankle. In the second clip he demonstrates a drill he calls “Circle Pops” designed to teach the athlete to jump while leaning in.

Shot Put: Power Position

In order to throw the shot put further than ever, the thrower must have great strength, and balance using the correct technique, including the power position. In the video clip below University of Buffalo assistant coach Jim Garnham, shows you how to get more out of the Power Position.

Pole Vault Progression Drills

The pole vault is a highly skilled event. Detailed instruction on the fundamentals is necessary for safety and success. In the videos below Tom Hays, University of Kansas head coach and vertical jumps coach and 2011 National Collegiate Pole Vault Coach of the Year, shows you drills that are part of his teaching progression. In the first clip, you’ll see two drills that will help teach pole vaulters to maneuver the pole and rotate/stretch their arm as they walk past it. The drills also help them find their grip height and feel what pole speed is. In the second clip, he continues the progression adding speed to the exercise eventually pole vaulting in the sand. Coach does a good job demonstrating key mechanics and common mistakes providing helpful coaching points.
