Acceleration out of the Blocks: Drill Progression

In the video clip below learn how to teach your hurdlers how to explode out of the blocks. The drill progression demonstrated below is from Colorado State University assistant coach Karim Abdel Wahab. Coach Wahab wants runners to come out of the blocks with their body on one line through the knees, hips, shoulders and ears.

Sprint Mechanics: Acceleration Phase Drills

The acceleration phase of sprinting is critical, as the work you do here sets up the transition phase and the maximum velocity phase. A good training program should include work in all three areas. In the clip below Dana Boone, the Texas State University head track & field coach, takes you through a series of acceleration drills with specific cues to help athletes learn speed-enhancing posture, alignment, and sprint form. Coach demonstrates the following drills: Wall Pushes, Wall Walk Ups, Wall Switches and finally the Falling Run.

Sprint Warm-up Drills that Teach Mechanics

Sprint Mechanics with Pat Henry

To reach maximum velocity sprinter need a perfect posture and great technique. In the the two video clips below renowned sprint coach Pat Henry, Texas A&M Head Coach, discusses technique and posture needed to be a great sprinter. In the first video he takes athletes through Marching Drills emphasizing a level chin, toe up/ankle flexed and hitting under your center of mass. He stresses the importance of the dorsiflexion of the ankle and the foot hitting under the knee. The second video is a mini-hurdle drill to work on posture and foot patterns.

Long Jump: Box Drills

Speed is important for the long jump; however, if an athlete does not have the proper mechanics and a consistent approach their speed will can not be fully utilized. In the clip below Wichita State University Coach Heidi Yost show three drill that three easy-to-use drills you can use to create repetitive and consistent approaches and create correct positioning and mechanics for the penultimate step and take-off
